Hello!

You can find out more about Chica Boom at www.lachicaboom.com.
Chica Boom is the founder and producer of KALEIDOSCOPE, A National People
of Color Cabaret, and this year Kaleidoscope 2009
it will be hosted in San Francisco! The show will be accompanied by a day of workshops
for and by performance artists of color and the general public. Kaleidoscope has been
extremely successful, selling out in 2007 and 2008 in Seattle and promises to be
just as successful in the Bay area. Here's a little more information about the event.

For the past two years, Kaleidoscope has brought together women, men,
and trans folks of color from Venezuela, Mexico, Canada, Los Angeles, New
York, Detroit, San Francisco, Seattle, Phoenix and Austin. It's the
first of it’s kind in Burlesque, in that it centers vaudevillians,
aerialists, drag artists, singers and neo burlesque performers of
color to inspire, entertain, represent and transform burlesque.
Kaleidoscope features drag, burlesque, music, and aerial art
performances and workshops in Spanish, Tagalog, and workshops tailored
for the needs communities of color. The wide range of performances are
erotic, sexy, hilarious, political and subvert racism and celebrate
people of color in performance! We have
been lucky enough to be have been honored by the presence of burlesque
legends from the past such as Detroit's very own Toni Elling, a protege of Duke
Ellington and a famous burlesque dancer from the late 50's.

In the past, Communities Against Rape and Abuse, INCITE!, Northwest Network for LGBT Survivors of
Abuse, Seattle Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, and EntreHermanos, (A Latino Queer Org) have
all sponsored the show. With the support of these organizations,
Kaleidoscope has flourished and become a venue for discussions about
how to use art as a tool for liberation, race positive sexuality, and the sexualization of race
and race politics.

I have a friend in Chicago who is a Burlesque performer and has African american heritage. I don't know what her burlesque name is, but I can ask when I see her in two weeks.

I'm Cuban/Puerto Rican. I'm more of a sideshow performer with a bit of burlesque thrown in. I've hear the term Gorlesque used. Anywho, I've noticed a lack of color in several interests of mine. Like in burlesque, punk, motorcycle riders, fire performing.

i'm filipino, which you can categorize as either asian or pacific islander, depending on who you're speaking with. (and with some forms, we actually have our own check box.)

anyhoo, i think it's a great idea to capture as much of the current community-- whatever your niche may be. i actually have a list somewhere.

I think I posted this before but I thought I would post again.

I maintain a section on my website on performers of African heritage in Burlesque, yesterday and today. I am particularly interested in today's Black performers in this genre (eg. Harlem Shake , Coco LaCreme, Coco Frambroise etc. ) as I think that it is important to document us now before we get lost in history. Goodness knows, we get nary a mention in current documentarys and books (I've looked!)

While I focus on Black history I would like to be able to add performers from the Latina and Asian communities as well (e.g. Erochica Bamboo of Japan) , given that there are even fewer of them as far as I can see.

So please check out my website and let know who I am missing. Thanks!
