I've tried this before with rather disappointing results, but lessons have been learned, I think this time I know what I need. I'd love it if you were already a burlesque dancer on your own, but just think performing in a troupe would be even more fun. I'm in the SF Valley, so the closer you are, the better. I need girls who can be responsible enough to show up for gigs and practice, and girls who can afford whatever costumes we decide we need. I want this to be a group effort... I don't necessarily want to run the whole show although I'm a pretty darn fabulous costumer and choreographer. I want us to do this together! All body types and looks welcomed, although I'd have to say, the more unusual, the better - I'd love to see tattoos, unusual hairdos and colors, fire or hoop skills, and anything that makes you uniquely you and will make our troupe amazing. PM me pretty please... let's do this!

I maintain a section on my website on performers of African heritage in Burlesque, yesterday and today. I am particularly interested in today's Black performers in this genre (eg. Harlem Shake , Coco LaCreme, Coco Frambroise etc. ) as I think that it is important to document us now before we get lost in history. Goodness knows, we get nary a mention in current documentarys and books (I've looked!)

While I focus on Black history I would like to be able to add performers from the Latina and Asian communities as well (e.g. Erochica Bamboo of Japan) , given that there are even fewer of them as far as I can see.

So please check out my website and let know who I am missing. Thanks!

I have recently been asked to perform at a private party. I am wondering what is acceptable to charge for such a performance? I don't really know where to start or what to expect.
Get your vintage sexy on with classic peel, tease, reveal...Taught by Lucy Morals from Romantasy Cabaret.

Curriculum focuses on stage presence, sensual delivery, stage personas, showgirl posture, learning dance steps, learning and creating choreography and group dancing. Props are explored and performance opportunities may be offered. Students should own black, heeled, professional dance shoes, black industrial dance-weight fishnets with no back seam, black unders as well as black show bottoms, a black waist cincher, a red decorated bra, red gloves and a black coque boa. Rhinestone, crystal and sparkly jewelry in red and black is encouraged as well as false eyelashes and stage make up for those who perform.
These days a dose of good news cant be left a secret!
In case you havent gotten tickets yet, may I take a mo' to tempt you? http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/52563

More fabulous additions to this Feb 28 show:
Food!
Those 3-plus hour shows can get a bit lengthy with a rumble in the belly! With only Jack in the Box and Waffle House to pick from we figured we'd best add more for our fabulous patrons. Welcome Royal Dogs (sounds kinda like a dirty stage name dont it?!) who sells yummy hotdogs, nachos and other pick-at-it-while-ya-watch-the-show kinda treats. Now we dont have the licensing to set em up inside so during intermissions head outside the front door and grab yourself some treats to eat. Sit on the patio to enjoy or take it to your table with you.

Additionally, with those yummy grubs ya'll might gain a thirst about ya. So OK. We, like snickers, really satisfy. Drink specials will be offered on the band side of our show (Red Owl) from 8pm-11pm and they are (lick yer lips, here they come):
Two $2 Dollar Heinekens (glug-glug-glug...)
Five $5 Dollar Sky Vodka drinks -fancy-!
Four $4 Dollar Washington Apple Shots (did someone say "dessert"?)

Speaking of dessert, as mentioned below in an earlier blog, we serve of Six Sweet Cheeks as our Saturday special, a plate of hot Thighza Sinnelli, double scoops from Lucy Morals (oh! what scoops they are!), a dish of Dolly Diamonds, and of course a heaping helping of Kissme McKinky if you so desire.

So not only do we have fabulous things to fill your tum-tum but glorious things to fill your eyes, your heart and well... what happens in your pants, stays in your pants.

Now let me remind you NOT to park in Waffle House lot. They DO and WILL tow.

If you feel, after reading the info below, you may be interested, please feel free to reach me by way of myspace under Lucy Morals or Romantasy Cabaret and I will send you info. With all the trouble I have had logging in to tribe lately I really dont check in here much anymore.

HUGS n JUGS
Lucy Morals

Hello dolls
This is Lucy Morals the bawdy broad with Romantasy Cabaret.

In addition to being on the stage of Romantasy Cabaret, I also write the show, direct and produce it. On days when I am not immersed in that craziness I teach bellydance classes and on occasion, burlesque dance classes.

It is important you all know, first, what burlesque is. Or maybe what it is NOT...
It is NOT pole dancing, it is NOT lap dancing, it is NOT bellydancing.

Burlesque is the classic dance of the tease; in fact burlesque performers do not become nude on stage nor do they show nipples or frontal nudity.

Classically, burlesque is about the art of tease and is an alluring, seductive, and almost secretive style of entertainment. It is as if one is peeking through a crack in the wall at a curvy woman peeling off her wardrobe.

Of course there are various modern takes on burlesque with acts like The Pussycat Dolls and the rising popularity in pole dancing. These more modern styles are not the style I teach. If that is what you are interested in, I have a highly trained friend who is very professional and is an amazing performer who can teach you the more modern styles.
I, on the other hand, tend to embrace more the vintage styles of tease and blend in cabaret and showgirl aesthetics to create a multi-faceted aspect of burlesque.

We take stockings and garters over pleather and hotpants. We prefer feathers and chiffon as opposed to plastic and stripper heels. We emulate glamor girls of the 30s 40s 50s and 60s as opposed to the Britannys, the Christinas and the Carmens of today.

With all of this said, and now feeling better about you knowing where I am coming from, I am putting together some burlesque classes or workshops. Do you think you might be interested?
ALL SHAPES N SIZES ARE WELCOME! CLASS IS INTRO LEVEL.

BURLESQUERCISE!™ INTENSIVE:

* The burlesque strut and bump-and-grind song interpretation.

* Burlesque prop use including boas and how to use your clothing (before and after removal) as effective stage props and how to take it off gracefully without tripping on your frilly nothings.

* How to craft a burlesque skit using timing to create drama, sensuality and humor.

* Turning up the sensuality with striptease techniques.

* Techniques for engaging your audience and getting the exact response you want.

NOTE: While this class includes striptease techniques, no nudity is required and all comfort levels will be respected, so don't be scared if you don't want to take it off!

This workshop is from 2-6pm on Sat, Dec 6th.

Cost with pre-registration: $65/ 4 hours

please call to register at 407-579-9765 or stop on in to either Orlando Bellydance location!
*********

We also have two more spots available for Betty's Famous 8 Hour Pin-Up workshop on Sunday the 7th, from 11-7pm. This amazing workshop will be limited to only 15 students maximum and consist of:

PART ONE: Pinup Posing Workshop

At the Pinup Posing Workshop, you will learn:

- Posture and posing secrets that work with any photography style to strategically emphasize and de-emphasize body parts to visually sculpt your body: emphasize your bustline, slim the midriff, elongate your legs, and slim out your hips or add weight to your booty (depending on your preferences)

- Pinup posing and photo movement, including specifics for face, body and hands.

- Techniques you can practice at home to master the art of always looking fabulous in front of the camera.

- Effective prop use: learn to pose well with everything from chairs to parasols to your own clothing and costuming.

- Personality projection: You've heard that "it's all in the eyes" and the best models "make love to the camera." Learn how to gain confidence in front of the camera and present a powerful persona.

- Photo styling: Coordinating clothing, accessories, props and backdrop/background to create stunning and effective imagery...

- What to pack and how to prepare for your photo shoot.

- Take home reference materials provided.

PART TWO: Pinup Photo Shoot

At the Pinup Photo Shoot, you will receive:

- Photo makeup and retro hair styling makeover!

- Plenty of time with our fabulously talented photographer, shooting multiple looks for a wide variety of images.

- Gentle instruction and detailed posing direction from Bombshell Betty during the shoot to ensure you get the most flattering images possible.

After the shoot, you will receive:

- A disk including high-resolution copies of all the images from the shoot, so that you may see for yourself which poses work for you and which ones to work on. This is highly unusual in the industry, as most photographers will only give you low-res proof images and charge you an additional fee for each high-res image or print that you order! With a Bombshell Betty Pinup Workshop, there are no hidden costs or need to buy the photos after the shoot!

Total Cost for this workshop is $250 for the 8 hours of instruction & retro makeover, including the photo shoot and full disc of your pin-up images.

A non-refundable downpayment of $125 is required to hold your spot, with the final payment being due Dec 1st.

I've got a problem with my knees - and I don't dare do any stretching or dance because of it. I'm hoping someone can suggest something I could do about it. Here goes:

This had happened before about a year ago - I think I'd probably pushed myself too far when stretching. My knees felt alright most of the time, but seemed to be unusually weak - they'd hurt if I landed on them too hard (when they hadn't before) and simply sitting cross-legged for too long caused me to feel like I'd pulled something.

I did get advised by a chiropractic to do exercises to strengthen my quadricepts. I did try these, but although the problem did go away I don't know if these actually helped - I was under quite a lot of pressure from work with no real support and simply didn't have the time to do any dancing, so it could just have been that I didn't put them under enough strain. (Though, thinking about it now, I did sit cross legged a lot without any problems...)

Anyway, I'm currently in the process of moving house - my parents helped me out, but this did include sitting in the back of a car for a LONG time with a lot of my things resting on my knees about a week ago, and ever since then the problem's returned.

I'm trying to find the chiropractic's exercises again, but not being sure if these were what had helped before I looked things up and I'm not entirely sure if "normal" doctors actually believe in chiropractice, so maybe I'd be taking too much of a dangerous risk trying again.

If my symptoms sound familiar to anyone, can they please offer some advice?

Thanks!

Amy.

(PS. I did ask the Ministry of Burlesque forum about this - but the only reply I got was "see a physio", and I'm not sure if this is going to be something I can afford.)

My name is James Courtney and I'm an illustrator and photographer specializing in Pin-Up art. You can see some of my work here on tribe or at my web site, Nakedcomix.com. I'm currently looking into venues in which to sell my stuff. I thought maybe Burlesque shows would be a good place to reach people looking for images of sexy, fun women.

I'm right now gearing up to do A.P.E. (Alternative Press Expo) the first weekend in November. So I'd be particularly interested in shows that are happening around late 2008 or early 2009. Some place that would be willing to lease out table space so I can sell greeting cards, prints and T-shirts of my stuff. If anyone here has any recommendations, I'd love to hear them.

Thank you all for your time and I hope to hear from some of you soon.
You can see it at community.livejournal.com/burle...1.html .

I don't know the seller; I've not seen the item. But if you like corsets and crystals, that is a sweet price.

"C'est La Guerre"
is seeking 4 dancers for a new dance/performance ensemble
"The Rain Dolls".
Though rooted in burlesque style this ensemble is NOT strip
oriented.

What this is : a 5 member ensemble that embraces a vintage ( PRE-1930's) dark aesthetic -
A random selection of influences :
Victorian Circus,
Steampunk,
Weimar Cabaret,
Storyville/Southern Gothic,
VERY Vintage Fetish ( no vinyl...none....at all...ever.)
However, we will not be anchored to vintage music.
At this time we are looking to build the ensemble- as it progresses, there will be
the opportunity to perform on a solo basis -and even explore burlesque performance.
right now though, we are building a solid group.
It cannot be stressed enough that this ensemble
will be themed with set characters that written for you.
You will be able to contribute-- but ultimately, the final call will be with the artistic director.

What this is not: The Pussycat Dolls ,Cutesy Retro Burlesque
or yet another underwear clad dance ensemble that prances to "Fever"--
To quote our artistic director "I'd sooner kill myself".

Qualified applicants possess:
-dance and stage experience
-an ability/willingness to be directed and choreographed and costumed.
-a high comfort level in wearing skimpy costuming.
-a willingness to shed one's usual image for a stage persona
-knowledge of Tom Waits and all he implies.( o.k. that is half true...but it is important)
-fearlessness
-a strong interest in any of the influences listed above
-an ability to commit immediately to
2 weekly rehearsals during the first month (1 weekly after the 1st show)
and at this time- 1 monthly performance ( 1st show July 3rd) .

**There is no height or weight standard
although, we are seeking one member who is 5'10 or
over and can dance well in heels.

What you get for putting up with all this:
-guaranteed pay for performances.
-the opportunity to perform in quality shows.
-the opportunity to be well promoted.
-great photos of you in fantastic costumes.

If you can a.) deliver and b.) are interested
send a recent photo, simple resume and cover letter
( tell us about you as a person and why you are interested )
to
cestlaguerre@fleurdelethal.com.
***DO NOT SEND ANYTHING ON MY SPACE****
We're serious...we won't count it ...
We will be meeting with potential candidates and casting
the show in the next 2 weeks -
rehearsals will begin the last week of May.

****We are also seeking 2 assistants who are interested in playing wardrobe,
being stage managers and getting on stage in prancy costumes to play along on occasion....
no dance experience required- just a desire to join the circus and a stronger desire to show off.

One night I want to do something very diva, the next a more campy number - perhaps seven veils. Anyway I have having a hell of a time finding music . . . I want something with a 1960's movie feel, like Herb Albert or Mancini. Any ideas of something with a vintage appeal I can vamp it up to? I want a definite middle eastern bossa-nova thing going on.

Here is the original posting:

I have a new movie called "Aberrant Behavior" auditioning Sat. 1/19 3:30-6:3- at the Dark Room SF 2263 Mission off of 19th and Mission@ 3:30 - 6:30. (My first movie "the period" came out through Sub Rosa Cinema can be seen/bought at Netflix www.myspace.com/theperiodmovie, as well as various other outlets)
Aberrant Behavior, is basically about two self destructive anarchistic-y street kids who have an exaggerated form of pica, a disorder where people feel compelled to eat non-food materials, carpet, dirt, soap, drano, various chemicals, etc. as portrayed as a drug addiction. There's more to it, but that's the basic synopsis. If you can't make it to the auditions, you can send me a head shot with resume, or whatever you want. We can then decide when and where to meet.

I will be hiring for many roles, all ages (over 18) races, sizes, etc. But here are the main characters:
Main Characters:
Victor Muertos: (Mid to late twenties) Half Mexican/Half white (Half latino/half white will probably work). Black hair, down to chin and five o clock shadow. (Flexible though). Tall and thin but not too thin.
Dark, brooding, depressed, prone to long winded sarcastic, cynical rants. Living off the state for mental depression, and addiction, but eventually breaks himself from the state. He hates the state, and normal life in general. He hates almost everything. He is sort of sloppy hipster, slightly emo, slight slight slight goth meets street kid. Light or no body mod, piercings, etc. He eventually lives on the street because of choice. He falls in love with Aiko.

Aiko Zumbi (18-early twenties or look like it) Half Japanese/Half German (or Japanese, or half Japanese/Half white). Shorter than Victor, thin but still slightly curvy.
Street kid with a bit of dark hippie. Has been sexually abused as a child. Prone to violence. Prone to long winded rants, or sometimes just total silence. Dark, cynical, with a very bleak view of life. Body mods, tattoo's, piercings, fine. Dreaded or colored hair fine as well. Actually preffered.
She falls in love with Victor.

Emma May (20's to 30's) Actress must be thin, because character is anorexic. Very fake, superficial, manic laughing. Very self deluded. She doesn't really see her anorexia as a problem, she think she looks great though she's obviously dieing and goes to extremes to keep herself thin. She is always dressed up elegantly and thinks of herself as a proper lady even when doing something grotesque . She is a head executive at a advertising/pr firm that she gets a Victor a brief job at, through meeting him in a class over there mutual addictions. (Brief Nudity /Partial a few times)

Caseworker Joe (30's-40's) Written has hispanic, but open. Larger guy, tall, built like a shed, a bit fat but not flabby fat. Very coarse, to the point, direct "Take no shit" kind of guy. Very normal, buys into the whole big house in the suburbs, good job, etc. He is Victor's Caseworker, and is tired of Victor's Shit, and believes he is not trying to quit. (None)

Glitters- a gay gangster rapper, take everything that's a cliche and horrible about it and flip it so that it's gay (some, will also need male models)

Pedida Muertos-Victors Mother. A nearly catatonic morally apprehensive drug addict who's always sleeping with random guys and ignoring her child (Some nudity/sexual situations can be negotiated to less)

And then random visuals, nudes for some flashback scenes (of some sort of psuedo porn the main characer shot) a girl that Victor sleeps with before he falls in love with Zumbi (requires brief nudity/sexuality) and some body part imagery that will not feature the face of the actor/actress, among other thing

thanks for reading
I'm going to be doing a performance piece in a few weeks and my inspiration for this piece is Maila Nurmi aka Vampira. She wore this super long fake fingernails that were a couple inches long but I'm willing to go a little shorter than that since it's a pretty informal venue.

Does anybody have any suggestions for the SF area?
